A Consultant Obstetrician and Gynaecologist,. Dr. Raphael Olarewaju has warned against the use of alum or any substance inside the vagina for the purpose of tightening. He made this known while featuring on Eve’s Lounge, a women-centric radio programme on Crest 91.1 FM, Ibadan.

According to Dr. Olarewaju, the vagina can become loose, which is often a normal occurrence in a woman’s body. After childbirth or as a woman grows older, the muscles around the vagina may weaken.

He explained that using alum to tighten the vagina is very harmful. “Alum is a chemical that contains components which can alter the pH balance of the vagina,” he said.

In his words: “I want to believe that men who complain about the looseness of a woman’s vagina are likely cheating. No vagina or penis is the same in size or shape.”

He added that while too much sex can contribute to vaginal looseness, it is normal for the vagina to expand, just like other parts of the body may get bigger.

Dr. Olarewaju further explained that there are medications and exercises, such as Kegel exercise, that can help tighten the vagina. In some cases, surgery may even be an option. “However, it is advisable to seek medical advice before using any drugs or methods for vaginal tightening,” he emphasized.

He also cautioned that oral sex can affect the vaginal health because bacteria present in saliva may be harmful to the vagina.

Dr. Olarewaju implored women not to insert any substances into their vaginas for the purpose of tightening. “The vagina is a self-cleansing organ, and you don’t need to put chemicals there,” he concluded.
